A real lunch box treat, easily made with never a thought of anything but perfect success!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups GW Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup table cream
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 4 Tbs. butter or margarine
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup nuts (optional)

Preparation

  1. Stir together in a 1 1/2 quart saucepan 2 cups of GW Granulated Sugar, cream, and salt.
  2. Place over medium heat and start to cook, stirring occasionally
  3. Caramelize the remaining 1 cup GW Granulated Sugar in saucepan and set over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until sugar melts and becomes a golden brown liquid
  4. Pour caramelized GW Granulated Sugar into the heated sugar and cream mixture, stirring vigorously. (The caramelized sugar will bubble and lump, but will melt with continued stirring)
  5. Cook candy to soft-ball stage (240* F or until a small amount dropped in cold water forms a soft ball)
  6. Remove from heat, stir in baking soda, and butter (or margarine)- (Candy will lighten in color and foam)
  7. Let cool without stirring or going until lukewarm (110*F)
  8. Add vanilla and nuts if desired
  9. Stir-beat with heavy spoon until candy becomes creamy and loses its gloss (takes about 5 minutes)
  10. Pour into a lightly buttered 8-inch square pan
  11. Cool
  12. Cut into pieces
