A real lunch box treat, easily made with never a thought of anything but perfect success!
Ingredients
- 3 cups GW Granulated Sugar
- 1 cup table cream
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 4 Tbs. butter or margarine
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup nuts (optional)
Preparation
- Stir together in a 1 1/2 quart saucepan 2 cups of GW Granulated Sugar, cream, and salt.
- Place over medium heat and start to cook, stirring occasionally
- Caramelize the remaining 1 cup GW Granulated Sugar in saucepan and set over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until sugar melts and becomes a golden brown liquid
- Pour caramelized GW Granulated Sugar into the heated sugar and cream mixture, stirring vigorously. (The caramelized sugar will bubble and lump, but will melt with continued stirring)
- Cook candy to soft-ball stage (240* F or until a small amount dropped in cold water forms a soft ball)
- Remove from heat, stir in baking soda, and butter (or margarine)- (Candy will lighten in color and foam)
- Let cool without stirring or going until lukewarm (110*F)
- Add vanilla and nuts if desired
- Stir-beat with heavy spoon until candy becomes creamy and loses its gloss (takes about 5 minutes)
- Pour into a lightly buttered 8-inch square pan
- Cool
- Cut into pieces
