Position Overview

  • The Western Sugar Cooperative has a challenging opportunity for a Transportation Specialist. The Transportation Specialist is responsible for managing truck transportation across the Western Sugar organization.  This position negotiates rates with trucking companies and coordinates the movement of Western Sugar products to customers and internal transportation to Western Sugar Terminal facilities.

Essential Functions

  • Be a safety leader with solid safety behaviors and demonstrated leadership
  • Develop and manage carrier base to meet needs of Western Sugar
  • Negotiates transportation rates and contracts with carriers
  • Provides competitive shipping rates to sales and customers at time of quoting new business
  • Schedules transportation for daily movements directly with carriers
  • Responsible for accurate receipt and payment of freight costs from carriers
  • Collaborates with shipping warehouses, supply chain team, purchasing, and sales to meet sales demand and supply chain needs
  • Manages claims process for Western Sugar and all carriers
  • Assists with the review of general dock and warehouse processes to ensure best practices are being used
  • Complies with all transportation regulations and company policies
  • Develop and support cost savings projects in unison with company operations
  • Analyzes and uses data to report on monthly cost performance, performance by customer, performance versus budget, and other major performance indicators
  • Stays up to date on changes in the transportation market and regulations

Skill & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Transportation or Logistics preferred
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in manufacturing transportation or logistics
  • Self-starter and possess the ability to work both independently and as a part of a team
  • Excellent organizational, prioritizing, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Analytical, detail oriented, accurate, timely with attention to detail
  • Proactive in identifying issues and implementing solutions
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Excellent computer competence (outlook, word, PowerPoint, excel, SAP)
  • APICs certification is preferred
  • Experienced with SAP
  • Experienced with Transportation Management Systems
  • Strong customer focus mind-set
  • Friendly, results oriented, and collaborative

Working Relationship:

  • Reports to the Supply Chain Director

Position Type: Full Time Status: Exempt Wage Range: $70,000 to $75,000 Location: Denver
