Position Overview

The Western Sugar Cooperative has a challenging opportunity for a Machinist. This position is responsible for operating, repairing, and overseeing the maintenance of mobile and machine equipment in the factory machine shop. The Machinist reports to the Maintenance Manager.

 

Essential Functions

  • Be a safety leader with solid safety behaviors and demonstrated leadership.
  • Operate various machine tools to manufacture and repair mechanical assemblies.
  • Record all data necessary to produce expected service and/or design results, including sizings and illustrations.
  • Use measuring devices and techniques correctly to assure proper sizings.
  • Perform milling operations such as drilling, tapping, boring, and conventional milling and lathe work, using various lathes Perform various metalizing (metal spraying) techniques as needed.
  • Perform various welding operations, including setup and use of MIG, TIG, torch and stick welders.
  • Set up and perform tool-post grinding operations (e.g., precision surface facing), broaching procedures, and babbitt bearing work.
  • Use various hand-held and stationary power and non-power tools, including but not limited to band saws, hand grinders, files, etc.
  • Lift, tighten, adjust and/or secure heavy objects in order to perform work and/or to observe safety precautions.
  • Observe all safety procedures and use proper protective gear.
  • Assist other maintenance personnel with skilled or non-skilled duties as directed by supervisor.
  • Must possess personal machinist-required tools.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

 

Skill & Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Knowledge and experience with the following:
  • Manual lathes, internal and external thread cutting, tapping, boring, grinding, reaming, knurling, cutting and parting, thermal spray coating, radial drill, milling operations, precision measuring instruments, stick and MIG welding, oxy acetylene welding and torching, reading blueprints and shop drawings and symbols, non-metal/metal/alloy material identification and uses.
  • Experience with the operation of hand tools, lathes, and mills to manufacture and repair mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience using measuring devices and techniques to assure exact sizing and proper tolerance on fits.
  • Have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Should be motivated, willing, enthusiastic and make independent decisions.
  • Organized and excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work cohesively with others.
  • Identify and repair broken parts and/or equipment.
  • Ability to stand or move around up to 12 hours, including rotating shifts and overtime as required.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to wear all required PPE.
  • Must be able to handle several priorities at one time.
