Position Overview


The Western Sugar Cooperative has a challenging opportunity for a Human Resource Professional.  The Human Resources Benefits Specialist/HR Generalist is responsible for developing, maintaining, administering, and updating employee benefits.  The Benefit Specialist/HR Generalist manages the administration of the human resources policies, procedures and programs. The Benefit Specialist/HR Generalist carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: benefit administration, Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), employee relations, and compensation.


Essential Functions


  • Be a safety leader with solid safety behaviors and demonstrated leadership
  • Developing employee benefits package that is flexible for all employees and affordable for the Company
  • Planning, implementing, and/or managing all 401k and retirement plans
  • Participates in planning and administers health and wellness programs
  • Explaining and researching benefit policies for employees
  • Provides benefit orientations, enrollments, claims processing and self-billing of insurance, Process and maintain all status reports and pay changes, both computer and paper systems.
  • Handles all COBRA processing with automated system
  • Prepares and maintains employee files, assuring accuracy, compliance and confidentiality
  • Coordinates and conducts training of employees in the understanding and utilization of employee benefits information
  • Planning, organizing and directing the actives related to group health, group life, dental, vision, short term disability, long term disability, and other benefits
  • Preparing deduction/contributions reports for each payroll
  • Reviewing and assuring compliance with Federal and State laws as it effects employee benefits
  • Preparing and developing communication and educational materials regarding the benefits package for all the insured employees
  • Developing and maintaining a system of procedures to administer the employee benefits programs
  • Acting as a liaison between all benefit plan representatives and employee benefits
  • Overseeing the reconciliation of health plan monthly eligibility report
  • Overseeing the reconciliation of premium reports from medical and other benefit plan companies
  • Reviews and maintains agreements with third party administrator of benefits
  • Provide a primary source of information on WSC’s policies and procedures for managers and employees
  • Provides main point of contact for HR vendors who provide third-party services
  • Participates with special projects and initiatives
  • Involved in training and development of employees
  • Assures regulatory compliance with governmental requirements
  • Responsible for policy administration and compliance
  • Oversees employee relations
  • Provides employee services and counseling
  • Manage the on-boarding process including development and updating of on-boarding activities, materials, etc.
  • Works with Managers to develop terms and conditions for new hires, transfers, and terminations, including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and release payments
  • Responsible for Employee recruitment across the Cooperative
  • Assist the VP of Human Resource with development of annual succession plans and salary plans
  • Provides monthly report showing actions and priorities
  • Other job duties as assigned


Skill & Experience Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with an emphasis in Human Resource or related field
  • 2-5 years experienced required in Benefits and HR Generalist
  • Demonstrated experience with improvements in benefit administration and employee relations
  • Excellent verbal, written, group facilitation, and presentation skills
  • Excellent computer competence (outlook, word, powerpoint,,excel, HIRS software)
  • Must be able to handle several priorities at one time
  • Strong customer focus mind-set
  • Solid leadership and influencing skills
  • Friendly, results oriented, and collaborative
