Title: Assistant Chemist

Location: Scottsbluff NE

Position Overview

The Western Sugar Cooperative has a challenging opportunity for an Assistant Chemist. This position is responsible for the accurate collection, analysis, recording and reporting of all relevant process data/control. The Assistant Chemist will also interpret and translate that data into useful information.


Essential Functions


  • Be a safety leader with solid safety behaviors, demonstrated leadership, and good manufacturing procedures
  • Uphold defined testing, product quality, safety, and environmental standards
  • Function as an information source to all company departments
  • Order and provide accurate inventory of the laboratory supplies and materials
  • Assist in auditing quality and sanitation practices and policies to ensure they are effectively in place (HACCP, pest control, chemical programs (managed by him/her), master sanitation schedules, internal audits, Health Department, FDA, AIB and BRC audits, GMP adherence, EPA, OSHA, etc.)
  • Collaborate with staff to continually improve safety within the laboratory Adhere to management directives and provide relevant feedback
  • Document processing for daily, weekly, and monthly reporting and auditing in a timely manner
  • Assist in maintenance and processing of relevant requirements for factory environmental permits
  • Report directly to the Chief Chemist


Skill & Experience Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or engineering field required, or extensive relevant experience
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills resulting in the development of reports, training and presentations
  • Strong analytical chemistry  and math aptitude, including statistical skills
  • Full understanding of standard laboratory methods and testing practices
  • Ability to multi-task effectively with the realization that versatility is required to focus on numerous tasks
  • Strong mathematical, accounting, and computer aptitude (Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, LIMS/WIMS, SAP)
  • Leadership, organizational, training, and presentation skills
  • Experience in working with 3rd party audit companies a plus
  • Ability to be self-driven
  • Friendly, results oriented and collaborative
  • Strong customer focus d-set
  • Self-starter and possesses the ability to work both independently and as part of a team


Travel Requirements, if any (please indicate percentage):

Up to 5%
